Delivery ID Requirements
Identification is not a formality: it is the control that connects a regulated order to an eligible customer. This page is educational and does not provide medical advice. Product availability, eligibility, pricing, and delivery details should always be confirmed in the live Nexus menu before ordering.
Understand age, identity, and documentation checks for adult-use and medicinal cannabis delivery in California.
Check your address and shop ↗Who can legally buy adult-use cannabis in California?
Adult-use cannabis is limited to adults who are 21 or older.
A delivery retailer must confirm that the customer meets the applicable age requirement. The name and birth date on the identification should be clear and the document should be current. Eligibility rules apply even when a customer has previously ordered, because the driver still needs to verify the person receiving the regulated product.
What changes for medicinal customers who are 18 through 20?
They need the documentation California requires for medicinal cannabis access in addition to identification.
DCC consumer guidance states that a person 18 or older may use cannabis with a physician's recommendation or medical marijuana identification card. A retailer may need to validate the document and any expiration details. This guide cannot determine whether an individual qualifies medically or whether a particular recommendation is valid.

Why must the order details match the person at the address?
Matching details help the retailer verify that the requested sale is going to the intended eligible customer.
Use your legal name when the ordering form requests it, and avoid nicknames that make comparison difficult. Be present at the delivery address with the original credential. If you notice an error after submission, contact support rather than asking the driver to overlook it at the door.

What can cause an ID check to fail?
Common problems include expiration, unreadable information, a name mismatch, a photo that cannot reasonably be matched, or the absence of required medicinal documentation.
The driver cannot use familiarity, a customer profile, or a photo of a document as a reason to ignore a required check. Altered credentials and attempts to order for an ineligible person can lead to refusal. Make sure lighting is adequate and remove anything covering the face during verification.
How can you prevent an avoidable delivery refusal?
Review the order name, address, age category, and documents before submitting payment or waiting for dispatch.
Keep your phone available in case support or the driver needs directions. Meet at the actual delivery address and do not ask for a handoff at a school, public property, or an improvised roadside point. When unsure about a credential, resolve the question with support before the vehicle is routed.
How can a customer evaluate an unusual identity document before ordering?
Ask support about the exact document before dispatch instead of assuming that any card with a photograph will satisfy the retailer's verification process.
Temporary licenses, damaged cards, passports, out-of-state credentials, and documents with a changed name can create questions that are difficult to resolve at the curb. Provide only the information the official ordering or support process requests, and never send sensitive identification through an unverified message account. The practical question is whether the credential is government-issued, current, readable, and capable of establishing identity and age under the retailer's lawful policy. A school badge, work card, photocopy, or social profile does not meet that purpose.
Name changes deserve advance attention. If the ordering account and identification use different names, ask what supporting documentation the retailer accepts. Do not create a second identity or use another adult's account as a workaround. The driver cannot safely decide a complex exception while other deliveries are in the vehicle. Early review gives support time to explain whether the document can be used, whether the account should be corrected, or whether the order cannot proceed.
Why is a clear photograph on the credential important?
The driver must reasonably connect the person at the delivery address with the identity shown on the accepted document.
Verification is more than reading a birth date. The photograph, physical description, name, date of birth, expiration, and signs of alteration form one identity check. Poor lighting, a damaged laminate, an obscured face, or an unreadable expiration can prevent a confident match. Meet in a well-lit area and have the original credential out of a wallet sleeve. Do not ask the driver to accept familiarity, a prior order, or an account profile instead of the current handoff check.
A failed verification does not necessarily accuse the customer of wrongdoing. It can mean the available document is insufficient for the regulated sale. The appropriate response is to keep the interaction calm, retain the order information, and contact support for the documented next step. Pressuring a driver to ignore a mismatch places the employee and retailer at risk and is unlikely to create a valid transaction.
What should medicinal customers verify beyond age?
Customers under 21 using the medicinal pathway should confirm that their identification and qualifying recommendation or card are current and accepted before checkout.
California distinguishes adult-use eligibility from medicinal eligibility. A person who is 18 through 20 does not become eligible for adult-use cannabis by selecting a different menu option. The medicinal transaction needs the documentation applicable to that customer, and goods marked for medical use only are restricted to qualifying medicinal sales. Retail staff can explain document requirements, but they cannot issue a recommendation, diagnose a condition, or decide that a medical document should be valid despite missing or conflicting information.
Customers should review the name, issue and expiration details, recommending practitioner information when applicable, and any state card information before ordering. Keep the original documents available at delivery. If a recommendation was renewed recently or exists only through an online portal, determine in advance what form the retailer can verify. That avoids a situation in which the customer has a genuine healthcare relationship but cannot complete the retail eligibility check with the materials presented.
What identification should you have ready?
Use a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID that clearly shows your identity and date of birth.
A California driver license or identification card is the most familiar example, but retailers may accept other government credentials that satisfy regulatory and operational checks. Acceptance policies can be narrower than the legal maximum. Contact Nexus support before checkout if a document is temporary, damaged, foreign-issued, or otherwise unusual.

Questions people ask before ordering
Will a photo of my ID work?
Do not rely on a photo or scan. Have the original, valid government-issued photo identification ready.
Can an expired ID be accepted?
Customers should expect to present current identification. Ask support about a recently expired or temporary credential before ordering.
Do returning customers still need ID?
Yes. Prior purchases do not eliminate the retailer's responsibility to verify the recipient at delivery.
